Buenos Aires saw a year-on-year decrease in poverty, but a rise in the final quarter of 2025. IDECBA reports 652,000 people in poverty, 93,000 fewer than last year, but 118,000 more than the previous quarter.

Buenos Aires Poverty: Annual Decrease but Quarterly Increase

Poverty in Buenos Aires has decreased. According to the Buenos Aires City Statistics and Census Institute (IDECBA), in the fourth quarter of 2025, 652,000 people were living in poverty, 93,000 fewer than in the same period of 2024. However, compared to the previous quarter, the number of poor people increased by 118,000. 21.1% of the population and 15.7% of households were in poverty. The indigence rate was 6.8% of the population (210,000 people) and 4.5% of households (61,000). Analysts note that income growth outpaced price inflation, leading to an annual decrease in poverty. Nevertheless, a surge is observed at the end of the year. 28.5% of poor households do not have enough income to afford the basic food basket. The areas most affected by poverty are households in the southern part of the city (25.3%) and those with children under 14 (28.6%). 34.5% of children and adolescents (0-17 years) live in poor families, which is, however, a decrease from the previous year (37.9%).
